Guide to Lightweight ebikes

Lightweight e-bike bikes are designed to ride much more like non-electric bikes. The lighter weight makes them great fun to ride with the electric power on or off. They're perfect for commuting, errands and recreational riding.

What are the factors that make an e-bike lightweight

Bike weight

The material used to make the bike frame is the most important factor that determines whether it's lightweight or not. Carbon is the lightest, but if a lightweight grade of titanium, aluminium or steel is used then the bikes can still be very light. The lighter your e-bike, the easier it will be to pedal around town!

Battery weight

Lightweight e-bike batteries don't weigh as much as heavy traditional e-bikes. They are often built into the down tube to avoid heavier fixings too. However, the lighter weight and smaller size usually mean less range than their heavier counterparts – but as you are able to ride the bike with the power off, long rides are still on the menu!

Motor power

Lightweight e-bikes usually run smaller, lighter motors like Fazua or Mahle. This means they generally don’t offer as much power, or torque, as the standard e-bike motors. However, due to the bikes being so much lighter, the motors don’t have to work as hard, which means you still get plenty of power to fly up the hills and ask the bike to help you when you need it.

What is the weight of a lightweight ebike?

Lightweight ebikes are now available around the 10Kg mark, which is only marginally heavier the a decent non electric road bike. That sort of weight comes at a cost though. Ebikes around 15 to 16Kgs are much more affordable and still great fun to ride with the electric power on or off.

Advantages of Buying a Lightweight E-Bike

Buying the lightest electric bike for your budget has several advantages.

  1. It’s easier to put in a car or on public transportation due to being less bulky and fitting into small spaces.
  2. Lightweight ebikes are easier for smaller riders to physically manage.
  3. Lightweight e-bikes offer reduced physical strain for everyone
  4. They are easy to carry upstairs or mount onto a bike rack.
  5. They are great fun to ride with and without electric assistance and often appeal to riders who don’t want all the power and help a traditional, heavier ebike offers.
